Topic: Propecia 1mg vs. 5mg Which is Right for Me?

Posted by: BaldGuy89

Hey everyone,

Ive been considering taking Propecia to help with my hair loss but I'm not sure if I should start with the lower dose of 1mg or go straight for the higher one at 5mg. Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks!

Hi BaldGuy89,

Great question! Propecia (finasteride) is commonly used to treat male-pattern baldness. The typical prescribed dose for hair loss is 1mg daily.

Why start with 1mg?Starting with the lower dose allows you and your doctor to assess how well it works for you without risking more significant side effects. Some men may see good results at this lower dose, and if not, we can always discuss increasing it.

What about 5mg?While finasteride is also available in a higher dose of 5mg (used for treating enlarged prostate glands), there isnt much evidence to suggest that going straight from zero to 5mg offers more benefits than the standard 1mg. Higher doses may not necessarily provide better results and could increase the risk of side effects.

It's important to remember that hair loss can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormones, and overall health, so what works for one person might differ from another.

Consulting with your healthcare provider is always recommended before starting any new medication, especially something as specific as Propecia. Theyll help tailor the treatment plan to fit your individual needs.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the detailed response, DocInWhite!

I guess starting with the lower dose makes sense. Ill set up an appointment with my doctor to discuss it further.

Do you know how long it usually takes to see results? And are there any common side effects I should be aware of?

Youre welcome, BaldGuy89!

Seeing ResultsIts important to note that Propecia can take several months before you notice any significant changes. Typically, most men see improvements around the three- to six-month mark, but it could be longer for some individuals. Consistency is key here missing doses or stopping use might undo progress.

Common Side EffectsWhile generally well-tolerated, side effects are possible and may include decreased sex drive (libido), erectile dysfunction, or reduced volume of semen. These symptoms typically diminish if you stop taking the medication but can persist in some cases.

Other less common but potential side effects could be breast pain, swelling, or tenderness; depression; headache; dizziness; and skin rash.

Again, these are generally rare, especially at the 1mg dose. Your doctor will provide a more comprehensive list of possible side effects and help you weigh the pros and cons.

Remember, communication with your healthcare provider is essential to ensure that Propecia fits into your overall health plan effectively and safely.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

I feel a lot more confident about discussing Propecia with my doctor now. Ill make sure to bring up any concerns and ask how often we should check in on its effectiveness.

Stay tuned for updates!
