Forum Topic: Prednisone for Dogs - No Perception Issues?

Poster: FurryFanatic123

Hey everyone! So I've been giving my dog Max prednisone for his skin allergies, and I've noticed that he seems a bit off. Not like he's in pain or anything, but almost... not quite himself? Is this something common with the medication?

Hi FurryFanatic123! Thanks for reaching out on this important matter. Prednisone is indeed commonly used to treat various inflammatory and allergic conditions in dogs. While it's generally effective, there can be a range of side effects associated with its use. Could you elaborate more on what specifically makes Max seem "not quite himself"? Are we talking about changes in behavior or physical symptoms?

Thanks for the response, DrVetWhiz45! It's mostly behavioral. He seems a little lethargic and isn't as enthusiastic about his usual activities like playing fetch or going on walks. Also, I've noticed that he doesn't seem to react as much to things around him. For example, usually, he would bark at passing cars, but now he just sort of looks at them without any real reaction.

I see what you mean about the changes in behavior and perception. It's not uncommon for dogs on prednisone to experience some lethargy or a decrease in activity levels as one of its side effects. However, the lack of perceptual response might be more concerning. This could potentially be linked to how prednisone affects the brain and nervous system, causing cognitive changes that impact perception.

It's important to monitor these symptoms closely. If Max's behavior continues to change or worsen, it would be wise to schedule a follow-up with your vet. They may want to adjust his dosage or explore alternative treatments if the side effects are too significant.

That makes sense! I was worried that he might have some kind of underlying issue. Should I stop giving him the prednisone, or should I wait until I can see a vet?

FurryFanatic123, its important not to suddenly discontinue any medication without consulting your veterinarian first. Abruptly stopping prednisone can lead to withdrawal symptoms and complications. Instead, contact your vet as soon as possible to discuss Max's current condition and the possibility of adjusting his treatment plan.

In the meantime, keep an eye on any other changes in behavior or health signs that might provide more clues about what he's experiencing. Its also a good idea to maintain a detailed log of his symptoms for when you speak with your vet next.

Got it! I'll reach out to the vet and keep an eye on Max in the meantime. Thanks so much for all your help, DrVetWhiz45!

I had my dog on prednisone briefly for an allergy flare-up, and he also became quite lethargic. My vet suggested reducing the dosage slowly while monitoring his reaction. It helped a lot with managing the side effects without causing withdrawal symptoms.

Hope this helps someone else out there!
