Forum Title: Prednisone Usage Discussion - Canada Edition

Posted by: SunnySideUp (12/3/2023 9:45 AM)

Hi everyone,

I've been prescribed some prednisone from a Canadian pharmacy and was wondering about the side effects. I've heard it can be really strong, especially if you take higher doses for longer periods. Could anyone with experience or knowledge share insights? Thanks!

Hi SunnySideUp,

Thank you for reaching out! Prednisone is a corticosteroid commonly prescribed for reducing inflammation in various conditions such as asthma, allergies, and autoimmune disorders. While it can be very effective, there are indeed potential side effects to be aware of.

The dosage and duration can greatly affect the severity of these side effects. It's crucial to follow your doctors instructions closely. Common side effects include:

  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Insomnia or trouble sleeping
  • Mood changes (irritability, depression)
  • Fluid retention

Long-term use can lead to more serious issues like osteoporosis, cataracts, and diabetes.

If you have any concerns or experience side effects, it's important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They might adjust the dosage or duration of treatment based on your response.

Let me know if you need more detailed information!

Thanks for the detailed reply, DrMedic89! That was really helpful. Im a bit worried about weight gain and mood swings. Are there any ways to mitigate these effects while on prednisone?

You're welcome, SunnySideUp!

Addressing those concerns:

  • Weight Gain: Prednisone can increase your appetite and cause fluid retention. To manage this:
  • Try to maintain a healthy, balanced diet low in sugars and fats.
  • Stay active with regular exercise as recommended by your healthcare provider. Low-intensity activities like walking or gentle yoga can be beneficial.

  • Mood Swings: Prednisone can affect mood stability for some individuals. Here are some strategies:

  • Engage in stress-reducing activities such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or light reading.
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule and ensure you get enough rest each night.
  • Stay connected with friends and family; support networks can be incredibly helpful.

If these measures don't help, its important to talk to your doctor. They may suggest additional treatments like counseling if mood swings become severe.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to add that Ive been on prednisone before and found that a good multivitamin with calcium and vitamin D helps significantly, especially for bone health. Its always best to consult your doctor or pharmacist about supplements though.

Great point, HelpfulHand! Supplements like multivitamins with calcium and vitamin D can indeed be beneficial for bone health when on long-term corticosteroid therapy. Always best to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Thank you for sharing that valuable information!
