Topic: Questions About Accutane Use and Purchase

Post by SkincareGuru123 (06/07 9:58 AM)

Hi everyone! I've been struggling with severe acne for years, and my dermatologist suggested trying Accutane. But before I start the treatment, I have a few questions. Can someone on this forum who has experience with it share their thoughts? Also, how do people typically get Accutane? Is it something you can buy over the counter or do you need a prescription?

Hi SkincareGuru123,

Great to see that you're doing research before starting any new treatment. Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, is a powerful medication used for treating severe acne. It's not available over the counter; you need a prescription from your dermatologist or doctor.

Accutane works by reducing oil production in the skin and preventing clogged pores. However, it can have serious side effects, so its important to use it under medical supervision. Make sure you discuss with your doctor all aspects of your health before starting this treatment.

Thanks DocKnowsAll for the quick response! That's good to know that I need a prescription. My dermatologist mentioned something about potential side effects but didn't go into too much detail. Can you elaborate on what kind of side effects people usually experience?

Post by DocKnowsAll (06/07 1:42 PM)

Sure SkincareGuru123,

Accutane can cause a range of side effects, which vary from person to person. Some common ones include dry skin and lips, chapped or bleeding lips, nosebleeds, joint pain, and sensitivity to the sun. More serious side effects might include depression, suicidal thoughts (which is why regular mental health monitoring is important), liver problems, vision changes, and birth defects if taken during pregnancy.

It's crucial that you discuss these potential risks with your doctor before starting treatment. They will likely ask you to sign a consent form acknowledging the risks and might also require regular blood tests while on Accutane.

That sounds like quite an extensive list of side effects. Im a bit nervous about it now. Is there anything I can do to mitigate these side effects, or will my doctor prescribe something else?

Post by DocKnowsAll (06/07 3:24 PM)

Absolutely, SkincareGuru123. Your dermatologist might recommend using a humidifier at home to help with dry skin and lips. They may also suggest moisturizers and lip balms.

Regarding other medications or treatments for severe acne, options include antibiotics (like doxycycline), hormonal therapies if its related to hormones, laser therapy, or light treatments. Each has its own pros and cons.

It's important that you and your doctor weigh the benefits of Accutane against its potential risks. Some people find the improvement in their skin worth dealing with some side effects.

Thank you so much, DocKnowsAll! This has been really helpful. I think I'll go back to my dermatologist and have a more detailed discussion about the treatment plan, including all the possible side effects.
